What to do in Boulogne-Sur-Mer |
- Venture through the town towards Grand Rue and Rue Thiers where there’s an abundance of quaint streets and all kinds of shops for you to visit. Head a little further up and you reach the Vieille Ville (old town) overlooked by the belfry and dome of the cathedral as well as the 13th Century stone ramparts. The old town and its cobbled streets are perfect for a gentle stroll around Boulogne though the main street Rue de Lille is quite steep. The Rue de Lille is a lively, pedestrianised area full of shops, restaurants, brasseries and market stalls and is a great place to stop and take a break.
- Perhaps unsurprisingly, a quarter of the population of Boulogne is involved with the fishing industry and the sea in some form or other. It should not come as a surprise then that Boulogne is home to Europe’s largest aquarium – Nausicaa National Sea Centre. See giant aquariums, marvel at the sharks, have fun with the California sea lions in addition to the many different exhibitions on show throughout the year. A visit to the Nausicaa centre should not be missed if you are visiting Boulogne and it is open all year round.
- A little further along the coast in the small fishing village of Etaples is the Mareis Museum, a fascinating museum about the life of a fisherman and his family. Boulogne is not just for those who want to enjoy a short break or an overnight visit. Explore the vast Boulogne forest with over 13km of footpaths, ideal for horse-riding and cycling or spend the day at the one of the long, sandy beaches which offers a wide variety of water sports. There are three 18-hole golf courses nearby at Wimereux and Hardelot, just a short drive from Boulogne.
